Representative Project Experience
EHS Auditing
Merck and Company, Environmental, Health and Safety Program Assessments, Various. Responsible for coordinating and administering Merck's worldwide Environmental, Health and Safety auditing/assessment program for 8 years. Integrated the previously separate Health and Safety and the Environmental auditing programs into single cohesive program. As Program Manager, defined auditor qualifications and audit criteria, and worked with Corporate EHS Organization to establish site-specific audit scope of work. Reviewed draft audit/assessment reports for quality and content to ensure consistency of reports across facilities and functions. Participated in EHS audits/assessments as Lead Auditor of both domestic and international sites. As Lead Auditor, responsibilities included development of the scope of work and protocol to be used during each of these audits/assessments, and technical and quality review of all reports. Lead and/or participated in due diligence assessments of domestic and international facilities which were to be acquired or divested by the company or one of its Joint Ventures. Conceived and directed the development of a proprietary, state-of-the-art computerized audit report development and tracking program that followed all findings to closure. Developed and implemented a consolidated reporting methodology that provided senior management with quarterly program status reports.
Liberty International Underwriters, Environmental, Health and Safety Risk Assessments of seven petrochemical facilities ranged in size up to $1.2 billion. Served as a Senior Consultant and participated in joint, multi company, risk assessments of major petrochemical facilities both domestically and internationally. Additionally, conducted stand alone on-site risk assessments of smaller petrochemical facilities for the client company. Provided client with written assessments of the potential risks associated with each facility and rated the level of sophistication/compliance of key EHS program elements.
Mobil Oil Company, Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Program Development and Compliance of Largest Petroleum Research Facility. Served as facility Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Manager and directed staffs in three functional areas. Additionally directed the work of the Mobil Fire Research group and facility to investigate and evaluate new and innovative fire suppression and emerging environmental spill suppression foam systems. Developed new programs and approaches to prevent and/or mitigate potential environmental spills of hazardous materials and evaluated new equipment and technology to reduce the volume of hazardous waste being generated on site. In conjunction with Mobil legal department, was able to implement recycling of large quantities of research “feedstock” of gasoline and oils back to the adjoining refinery that was acceptable to both state and federal environmental authorities. Coordinated two spill remediation projects associated with uncontrolled releases on a rail siding and in the tank farm. Conceived and implemented a computer system for the receipt and tracking of research chemicals from receipt to disposal. Significantly upgraded site physical security systems.
Mobil Chemical Company, Loss Prevention Program Development and Compliance of Two Divisions. Served as Loss Prevention Manager for two Divisions. Developed a compliance auditing program for assigned sites that was validated by the Mobil Corporate auditing group. Audit responsibilities included review of current unit operating, sampling and recordkeeping procedures for consistency and compliance with both company and governmental programs.
ER Carpenter Company – Development and Implementation of Environmental Health and Safety Programs. Served as the company’s first Director of EHS and developed and implemented comprehensive and consistent programs across this multi-facility domestic company. Worked with the various facilities to complete initial RCRA registration and developed and implemented methodologies to reduce waste chemical generation and to comply with disposal requirements. Conducted audits of facilities to assess compliance with applicable EHS regulations. Initiated and directed the cleanup of two existing chemical waste sites on company property which consisted of nearly 4,000 unmarked drums of chemicals. Cleanup of one site resulted in the recovery of $90,000 worth of usable chemicals.
EHS Management Systems
Merck and Company, Inc. Program Development. Served as Project Leader and assessment team member for initial review of existing corporate and business unit environmental, health and safety programs and guidance documents to determine if they could be appropriately “mapped” into EHS management systems consistent with the ISO 14001 specification standard. Adopted the ISO 14001 format for environmental management system and devised a safety and health management system that was similarly structured. Conducted a “gap analysis” against both systems and identified missing and/or desirable program elements. Served as contributor and coordinator for the preparation of newly formatted program element guidance documents.
Management System Auditing. Participated in the development of a comprehensive safety and health management system auditing program and acted as Lead Auditor for numerous assessments both domestically and internationally. These assessments were conducted so as to identify potential areas of concern and gaps in EHS program development and/or implementation. As Lead Auditor, responsibilities included development of the scope of work and protocol to be used during each of these assessments, and technical and quality review of all associated reports.
